The president of the state’s nurses and ancillary staff union jumped into the Bhakra canal on Wednesday while demanding full pay scales and other allowances after regularisation of jobs. The divers immediately jumped into the water and took out the nurse within minutes. They were called by the administration to tackle any emergency situation. After the act, she was taken to hospital where she was reported to be in the intensive care unit (ICU), while the police took all other protesting nurses into custody citing preventive measures.
On Tuesday, four members of the union climbed up the iron-bridge on Bhakra canal, which adjoins Century Enclave police post, threatening to commit suicide by jumping into the canal if the state government fails to meet their demands. At about 2 pm, president Karamjit Kaur jumped in the flowing water, while three others were still positioned upon the bridge. On Monday, the protesters had shifted their venue of protest from the OPD gate of Rajindra hospital to the bank of Bhakra canal.
Director, research and medical education, (DRME) Punjab, Dr Manjit Kaur Mohi along with other health department and administrative officials visited the spot and tried to negotiate with the protesters but they refused to engage in talks.
